A 53 year-old woman was injured when she crashed into a 50 foot metal beam that had been dropped on I-95 south. According to Authorities construction crews were doing maintenance work near Exit 78 when a crane hoisting a 50 foot beam tipped over, dropping the metal beam. The beam landed on the jersey wall, crashing across the 3 southbound lanes of I-95.
The driver, Gertrude Clarke tried to avoid the beam by swerving onto the left shoulder, however, the front of her Mitsubishi SUV struck the beam and was pinned against the center concrete divider.
Gertrude Clarke suffered minor injuries and was transported to VCU Medical Center.
Virginia State Police were on the scene and closed all southbound lanes, and the far left lane of I-95 north. Construction crews were able to remove the beam and all lanes were re-opened around 3:15 but not before traffic had backed up for several miles.
Investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause of the crane accident, all maintenance work has been suspended while Authorities access the situation
