A 43-year-old Toronto woman has been killed and 13 others injured after a TTC bus collided with a truck carrying a crane near Lawrence and the Don Valley Parkway, just as the afternoon rush hour was underway.
Emergency crews were called to the scene before 3 p.m. at Lawrence Avenue East and Railside Road.
“A driver of a Ford Crane truck, was also travelling westbound on Lawrence Avenue East, when it was rear-ended by the bus, causing it to crash into the guardrail,” police said in a release Tuesday night.
“As result of this impact, a third vehicle, a Honda, also travelling westbound on Lawrence Avenue East was struck by debris from the collision.”
Police said there were 14 passengers in total on the bus at the time of the accident.
Six were taken to Sunnybrook hospital for treatment and three were taken to a local area hospital. Four didn’t require hospitalization. The nature of the injuries hasn’t been disclosed.
A young woman, who was one of the uninjured passengers, told CityNews others on board were badly hurt and bleeding.
“It was pretty scary,” she said.
Const. Hugh Smith said the bus may have been making a lane change when it hit the back of the truck.
Lawrence was closed in both directions between Don Mills and Railside for several hours.
