Stagehands Injured in Mini-Crane Accident at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Manhattan, New York

Two stagehands were injured when a mini-crane fell on them at Jazz at Lincoln Center inside the Time Warner Center on Friday afternoon, officials from the performance venue said.

“During the set up for an evening performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, two stagehands were involved in a minor accident,” according to a statement from Jazz at Lincoln Center. “They are receiving medical attention and the performance is scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. as planned. The incident is not related to any activity or equipment that occurs or is used during the performance.”

The accident unfolded at 2:15 p.m. at the building at Broadway and 60th Street, according to the FDNY, which said three people were injured.  A Genie Lift — a small, man-sized lift — tipped over, fire officials said.

A worker from Jazz at Lincoln Center said the accident happened while setting up a stage for Friday night’s performance of composer Poul Ruders’ opera, “Dancer in the Dark,” based on the Lars von Trier’s film. The performance is part of the Lincoln Center Festival.

The victims were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center. None were in serious condition, fire officials said.
