Calgary police said the 1997 Saturn was westbound on 50th Avenue S.E. when it crossed the centre line, colliding head-on with the crane truck.
The driver compartment of the Saturn was badly crushed by the force of the impact, police added in a press release Wednesday morning.
The identity of the deceased was withheld pending next of kin notification.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
Global News reports the crane had been involved in the highrise incident earlier in the evening.
A mishap sent debris plunging 13 storeys to the pavement below at the Luna condo tower under construction on 12th Avenue S.W. at about 5 p.m.
No one was hurt, but debris struck a vehicle and a pedestrian was nearly hit.
A lift mechanism had failed, leaving a large piece of decking precariously hanging from the 14th floor for several hours.
The street below was closed to traffic and pedestrians while crews tried to secure the material.
The emergency crews wrapped up for the evening shortly before 9:30 p.m.
