A day after the death of cyclist Kankad Kumar, 25, in a road accident, cops have managed to arrest driver of the crane, Kuldeep Singh of Daria village industrial area-I, on Saturday.
Kankad was hit by a crane before a police party at the dividing road of sector 49/50 but cops failed to reach in time and the accused driver Kuldeep Singh managed to escape. SHO of PS 34, inspector Kirpal Singh, said the driver was traced through the registration number of the crane and a criminal case has been registered against him at police station, sector 34.
The incident took place near a liquor-vend and the cyclist was dragged for around 20 meter, by the crane. Eyewitnesses who came on the outcry, smashed windowpanes of the crane in the protest of police apathy while dealing with the case.
Kankad was returning to his house in Jagatpur village in Mohali when the crane hit him on April 8. He was rushed to Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH)-32 and doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been handed over to his family members after postmortem examination.
On the other hand, body of Balram, 22 was also released to his family members after postmortem examination in GMH-16, on Saturday. Balram reportedly died in a road accident on March 30, but his body was kept in the mortuary of GMH-16 as unidentified till April 8.
