Six elementary school students were killed Monday morning after being hit by a crane truck in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, local police said. The 26-year-old truck driver, Masato Shibata, was arrested at the scene. He is believed to have crossed the center line and run into a group of children on their way to school, among whom six—five boys and a girl—were killed.
No alcohol was detected in Shibata, police said.
The six children were identified as Mika Sekiguchi, 9, Keita Shimozuma, 9, Taiga Ihara, 9, Kyoya Hoshino, 10, Takuma Omori, 11, and Manato Kumano, 11, according to police.
The driver was hunched over the steering wheel as if he was hugging it when his vehicle hit the children and came to a halt inside the premises of a nearby house, according to eyewitnesses.
