Henry County Sheriff Butch Baker told 24-Hour News 8 rescue crews responded to ATI Allegheny Ludlum Corporation at 516 W. State Road 38 in New Castle shortly after 10 a.m.
The two workers, both contractors from Ohio, were on a scissor lift performing maintenance when the lift fell, Baker said. The man who died was wearing a safety harness, but the man who is currently in critical condition was not wearing a harness.
New Castle Police and EMS responded to the steel factory to treat the workers. Crews took the deceased worker to Henry County Hospital while the injured worker was flown to Methodist Hospital
The plant specializes in making stainless steel sheets.
A Notre Dame student was killed last Fall when a scissor lift he was using to tape football practice toppled in high wind. The university announced Tuesday it has banned the use of lifts for filming practice.
