Richmond Hill, Georgia
Federal safety officials are investigating a fatal accident near Savannah in which a worker fell to his death.
The victim, who was not identified, fell 18 feet Thursday after becoming entangled with a metal rafter being raised by a crane at a construction site in south Bryan County.
According to Bryan County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Mickey Sands the man died at the scene after falling head-first and hitting his forehead on a concrete floor.
Prior to falling, the victim had been standing on top of a wall helping place the rafters in position at the middle school under construction south of Richmond Hill.
Authorities believe the deceased was a Guatemalan national in his late 30s but positive identification had not been established late as of Thursday.
“We don’t really know who he is,” Sands said. “He is listed with one name with his employer, but he had a card in his wallet listing him as someone else.”
