The Pearl Daikanyama care home has about 170 residents and workers, but none was injured when the machine came tumbling down, the police said. The only casualties from the crash were some shattered windows.
Hiroko Shintani, 77, chairwoman of Pearl Social Welfare Corp., which manages the facility, said the arm of the crane hit a room on the third floor housing a 100-year-old woman.
“I thought someone dropped a bomb,” the woman was quoted as saying. “Glass was broken and pieces flew. No one was hurt and I cried” with relief.
The crane operators, a 60-year-old man, was attempting to lift a 1.5-ton piece of concrete when it fell, the police said.
Fifteen people were working at the construction site as of 8:30 a.m. Monday.
