State officials say a crane accident at a mining site in southeastern Kentucky has fatally wounded a worker.
A state official says the worker was struck by a crane arm at around 6 p.m. EST Monday at a site owned by Perry County Coal Corp.
Ricki Gardenhire, a spokeswoman with the Energy and Environment Cabinet, says the coal company hired contractors from New York-based Frontier-Kemper Constructors to bore two holes for miner access.
Two of the contractors were changing equipment on a crane when the arm fell several feet and landed on top of two workers.
Gardenhire says one man was flown to the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville, where he later died. The other worker was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. His condition was not known Tuesday afternoon.
