A construction worker was taken away on a stretcher by the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad on Friday when a crane at the former Pelican Cove Restaurant collapsed on the addition he was working on. Renee Edwards, who was in her office at Morgan and Edwards Real Estate on the adjacent property, and Joey Casey, who was walking along the sidewalk, both said they were watching as the crane broke and crashed. “All I saw was people falling,” said Edwards. “Everybody took off running,” added Casey. Dave Skirvin, who works across the field at Grover’s Auto Repair, said he heard a loud crash and “knew it was something big.” Walter Alford, owner of the building, said the addition is intended to house office space.
