People travelling on Third Main Road in Ambattur (near the Telephone Exchange) had a harrowing experience on Monday evening when iron rods weighing about 50 tonnes came crashing down from an overhead crane, killing one person and injuring five. The crane was being used at the construction site of a flyover.
Construction of two flyovers on the Telephone Exchange Road has been on for a year now. At about 6pm on Monday, work on one of the flyovers was in progress when the ropes of a crane that had lifted iron rods weighing more than 50 tonnes of iron rod gave way and snapped suddenly. The metal rods came crashing down to the road below where there were motorists and pedestrians.
