Greenwood Village, Colorado
A worker was killed in Greenwood Village this morning when the crane he was operating ran off the road.
The first call came in about 9:37 p.m., said Andy Lyons of South Metro Fire Rescue.
The accident happened at the corner of East Green Oaks Drive and Orchard Road, in Greenwood Village.
A “self-propelled crane” that belongs to a custom-home builder was being moved from one job site to another, Lyons said.
A colleague was driving a pickup ahead of the crane operator. He told investigators that the crane at first was going normal speed, but then got faster and couldn’t stop. He moved the pickup out of the way, but the crane swerved, ran over a stop sign and across Orchard. It went down a hill into Big Dry Creek.
The driver of the pick-up told investigators the crane operator was “half in, half out” of the crane — maybe preparing to jump, Lyons said.
The crane stopped on its wheels with the operator underneath it.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene; his identity has not been released.
Greenwood Village police are investigating the accident, Lyons said.
A cause has not been determined.
