Crane Fire Causes Problems for Auckland Firefighters

New Zealand

Firefighters used aerial ladders to pump foam onto a burning straddle crane at the Ports of Auckland today.

The crane driver noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment and tried to fight the fire with an extinguisher but made little progress and raised the alarm, fire safety officer Russell Dickson said.

The crane engine was about 20 metres off the ground and could only be reached by ladder.

He said another crane would be used to lift off the heavy engine covers so fire safety officers could get a close look and find out what caused the fire.
