A trucker hauling a crane who crashed into an Interstate 10 overpass in Marana has been cited, Marana police said.
Trucker John Holcombe, 43, of Casa Grande was cited Monday on suspicion of violating a roadway height restriction and on suspicion of failure to control his speed to avoid a collision, Sgt. Tim Brunenkant said.
The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Monday and briefly closed all I-10 eastbound lanes, but the left two lanes reopened at about 10 a.m., Brunenkant said. The crash caused an estimated $200,000 damage, he said.
Holcombe, who was heading to Phoenix, was driving under an overpass to go north on I-10 when the crane he was hauling hit the bridge, Brunenkant said.
The bridge has a sign showing the clearance is 15 feet, 2 inches. The rig and cargo were measured at 16 feet high, the sergeant said.
Two support pillars and the overpass were damaged, showering the roadway with large chunks of cement, Brunenkant said.
Highway engineers believe the bridge can be repaired and will not have to be replaced, he said. Westbound lanes were not affected.
