Nine Asians were injured seriously in a horrific vehicle pile-up after a mobile crane crashed into one car, hit a cement road barrier and brought down an electric pole at the busy National Paints roundabout here yesterday afternoon.
The diesel from the crane spilt on to the road and there was a short circuit from the fallen electric pole, resulting in a power outage for several hours in the area.
The accident caused a huge traffic jam for over two hours.
The accident, which involved a pile-up of six cars, occurred when the Pakistani driver of the mobile crane, Osman Rasheed, 27, suddenly applied the brakes which were faulty, according to a police source.
The driver lost control over the vehicle due to the high speed and the crane collided into a Toyota car causing serious injuries to four passengers. It also knocked down the electric pole which hit a car coming from the opposite direction, damaging it completely and injuring its driver seriously.
Three more persons were injured as five other cars coming from behind the Toyota car crashed into each other.
The crane driver also received injuries. The Sharjah police received an accident alert around 3.30pm.
The Anjad patrol, police ambulances and traffic police officers rushed to the scene. The injured were all rushed to the Al Kuwaiti Hospital. They are admitted in the ICU.
A top official of the Sharjah Police said the accident occurred due to the negligence of the mobile crane’s driver who should have checked the brakes before taking the vehicle to the road. Besides, he was also driving at a high speed during the peak traffic time at the roundabout, he added.
