Blue Grass, Iowa
A 41-year-old worker died this morning following a 58-foot fall at Ipsco Steel Inc. at 1770 Zachary Ave.
The name of the employee is being withheld until all of his relatives have been contacted, said Kelly Brossart, a spokeswoman for the Lisle, Ill.-based company. She said he had worked at the plant for seven years.
“He was working on a crane in our melt shop,” she said. “It’s where we recycle scrap to make steel.”
Capt. C.J. Ryan of the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office said the man was pronounced dead at the plant and a medical examiner was notified.
No other details about the accident or the victim have been released. An investigation by the sheriff’s department is under way, Brossart said.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been contacted. Grief counselors have been called to meet with employees at the plant, which employs 420 people, along with another 150 contract workers.
“Our entire operation in Iowa has been halted,” Brossart said. “We’ve stopped production.”
The plant was shut down, she said, in order to help authorities with their investigation of the accident and to give Ipsco employees time to grieve and cope.
The steelmaking and fabricating plant is one of three steelworks Ipsco operates in North America.
