Falling Drywall Showers Pedestrians

10/18/00

Vancouver BC

Falling drywall showers pedestrians.  The accident occurred when trying to load drywall onto the 47th floor of a new highrise in Vancouver BC and the leading edge caught on the building resulting in the load becoming unbalanced and dropping out of the basket rigging. The crane operator was operating in the blind and relied on the riggers to give clear and adequate instructions for the lift. No tag lines were used and the load apparently swung out of the intended position as it was being hoisted. The load consisted of 40 sheets of drywall stacked in two skids.
