Punta Gorda, Florida
At the site at the end of Port Bendres Drive, the machine tipped over on its side. Another crane was used to lift both the operator and the crane out of the canal. Several injuries were reported although details were not available at press time.
Punta Gorda Fire Department officials and officials with the city’s police department and canal maintenance unit heard about the mishap around 8:30 a.m and arrived at the scene shortly afterward.
Assistant Fire Chief Matt Free said that workers erected plastic barriers around the fallen crane to prevent any oil or gas spills from contaminating the canal and that another crane raised the malfunctioning one from the waterway. “The crane was out of the water at 1:30 p.m. and our job was completed at 2:30 p.m.,” Briggssaid.
Lt. Ray Briggs of the Punta Gorda Fire Department said, “I don’t know if the accident was caused by human or mechanical error.”
A mechanical malfunction and the softness of the terrain contributed to the operator’s loss of control of the machine. “He was close to the seawall and the ground was soft and the machine just fell,” Briggs said.
