The freak accident on Ohio River claims life of a Jeffersonville, Indiana man. It happened at Tartans Landing in Goshen. Police say the crane, which was attached to a floating barge, snapped from its base. When it fell, it hit 34-year-old Steven T. Ayres of Jeffersonville, and trapped him underwater.

Officers say the crane was being used to lift up a dock so Ayres and two other men could put new Styrofoam underneath. Officer John Meadors with the Oldham County police said, “He had been cinching the cables, tightening them a little and at that point is when the crane broke and just fell. The other men were clear, they were able to get out of the way.”

The two men with Ayres say he showed no sign of life after the accident. It took about three hours to free him because of the weight of the crane.

It was Ayres second day on the job. An investigation is under way.
