Wind Gusts Knock Crane Over

05/15/99

El Paso, Texas

It was at a remote job site outside of El Paso. Forrest Construction is the name of the contractor. It seems they had “tipped over” a Manitowoc model 4100. A Lampson Crane was on site trying to get the crane back upright. Apparently, the boom from the downed crane got into the boom of the uprighting crane via a nasty wind gust. It was an open throat boom that was sheared and thrown on top of a worker, thus pinning him down. A few inches in any other direction and we would be reporting a fatality. He is in the hospital with a broken arm, separated pelvis, broken femur, and head injuries.
