MERCER ISLAND – A construction-crane operator escaped injury this morning on Mercer Island when his rig toppled as he was raising a concrete culvert.
The accident downed power lines and caused an electricity outage near Southeast 33rd Street and 94th Avenue Southeast.
Firefighters said the crane was loading culverts weighing several tons each onto a truck at about 11 a.m. when the crane tipped over, crushing the crane’s cab.
As it fell, the crane boom hit a utility pole, which smashed into a house. Nobody was home at the time, and a damage estimate was not available.
