Oakland, California

ALAMEDA COUNTY – Construction at a freeway job site will be suspended for several days after three workers were burned when their crane hit a power line early yesterday, authorities said.

The accident happened about 1 a.m. near the junction of Highways 13 and 24 as the workers were installing 300 feet of a concrete barrier, said Colin Jones, a spokesman for the California Department of Transportation.

Dave Jimerson, a worker for contractor R.M. Harris of Concord, received second- and third-degree burns and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, where he was reported to be in critical condition. Another worker and an inspector were treated for minor burns. Their names were not released.

“It’s a very serious accident, and we’re fortunate that we didn’t have a fatality,” Jones said. “Safety is always the most important concern for us, so we’ll shut the work down for a couple of days to figure out what went wrong.”
