San Francisco, California
A crane operator who was crushed to death in a freak accident in the Potrero district Wednesday morning was identified yesterday as a 38-year-old Manteca man.
According to the coroner’s office, Jose De Lara was fatally crushed by a steel girder at a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. facility at 1201 Illinois Street.
De Lara, a crane operator for ICONCO Construction, was operating a 6,000-pound wrecking ball crane to demolish a building at the PG&E station.
At 9:20 a.m., a 6-foot steel girder fell off the fifth floor of the building toward the cab of De Lara’s vehicle. He reportedly jumped from the cab in an attempt to avoid the girder but was struck on his right side with tremendous force.
De Lara was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital. He was pronounced dead an hour after he arrived.
