A construction worker died Thursday morning when the crane he was operating toppled over at the site where a new Garden Ridge store is being built to replace one that burned last October at I-45 near Texas 242 in Conroe.
The crane was lifting a section of a wall for the new store, located at 16778 I-45, when it tipped over around 10 a.m., store when it apparently fell over, Conroe police Sgt. Joe Smart said. The crane fell on its side, taking out a section of fence and crushing the operator cabin, and killing the man inside.
The exact cause of the accident is currently unknown, Smart said.
Units from the Conroe Police Department, Conroe Fire Department, The Woodlands Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and EMS soon arrived. The man, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body had to be freed from the wreckage, Smart said.
Investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also arrived at the scene to survey the site and the accident, Smart said. Officials also worked to clean up hydraulic fluid that spilled from the crane when it fell over.
Around 6 p.m., a second crane brought to the site to lift the first crane had succeeded in doing so, Smart said.
People shopping inside the nearby Kohl’s department store reported hearing a large crash outside. Witnesses said they spotted the crane lifting a large section of a wall moments before hearing the crash. The original Garden Ridge store burned down on Oct. 12, 2011 in a three-hour blaze. An investigation eventually ruled that it was caused by arson, but no arrests have yet been made.
Axiom Construction Company LLC in Spring is the contractor for the construction project. Officials with the company could not be reached for comment.Cr
