A crane driver has been rescued by firefighters from his rig above a burning building in Wollongong, south of Sydney.
Smoke enveloped the crane driver after fire broke out below him on the top floor of a four-level steel milling structure in suburban Coniston at about 9.30am (AEST), NSW Fire Brigades spokesman Ian Krimmer said.
Firefighters rescued him shortly after 10am (AEST) and treated him for smoke inhalation.
The man’s rig was more than 10m above the building and he was in no danger from the flames.
Eight fire units were battling the blaze, which was expected to take several hours to extinguish.
